You see yourself waking up late in the morning again, taking your phone, and just gooning. You scroll through Instagram, YouTube, or TikTok, and then it’s already 11 AM. You ask yourself, “How is it that late already?” Does this happen to you? Then it’s time for you to change that behavior in a radical attempt at detoxing your brain by starting a dopamine detox. Digital detox, or dopamine fasting, is what you need in that case.
What you benefit from a dopamine detox
A dopamine detox is not just hard work; it will also benefit you to a large degree. It will make you less distracted and more productive. Sure, it’s difficult to pass it, but it will drastically change your productivity and energy. More importantly, it will likely make you more fulfilled and happy than you are now. A dopamine detox helps you eliminate distractions and even helps to recharge productivity.
Why is that so? You will be able to rewire your brain naturally over time as you replace unhelpful habits with focused activities. Constant misuse of social media, gaming, or even worse stuff does make you addicted to it. Meaning you will very likely experience less dopamine from things like reading or going for a walk. However, with training yourself over a few days or, in the best case, a week to be without gaming, social media, etc., you will experience way more happiness while working, reading, and learning. These improvements will dramatically make your life more productive, effective, and fulfilled.
Clean your devices
You probably have a number of devices, like a laptop and phone. These will automatically distract you and stop your dopamine detox. So the first thing you need to do is clean off everything that can distract you. Stuff like video games, Instagram, YouTube, etc. should be deleted or temporarily, for the time of the detox, blocked.
For an effective digital detox, remove these distractions, and if you just want to block them, consider using tools that support dopamine fasting. Figure out what stuff exactly you use on your phone and what will likely just distract you.

What else to remove

But next to those activities, you also need to avoid certain substances. Don’t drink alcohol, like beer, wine, or worse types of alcohol. Avoid these temptations to further recharge productivity and keep your energy up. Food like this is not only unhealthy for your body long-term but will also make you less energized. Finally Get rid of every other activity that will distract you and make you less productive. In example, don’t watch TV, except if it’s educational. (However, if you do a full digital detox, then don’t). Otherwise, you might have additional distracting items that are not included in the list. Discuss for yourself what else to remove and what not.
How can you spend your time?
During the detox, there will come times when you are just bored. Because not always will there be something to do. In those cases, you might feel an urge to play a video game, watch TV, or do something else. You have to avoid this truly, since it will set back your entire work. Even during a dopamine detox, moments of boredom are natural and can be a signal to reflect and relax. These days we are afraid to be bored, but we actually need to be bored at some times. It’s simply beneficial for us to spend time doing nothing.
Just sitting and thinking will be beneficial. You might get a new idea or find out something new about yourself. Otherwise, there are plenty of activities you can engage in during your free time. Especially you should work. You probably have one or two goals that you want and should work towards. Whether it be learning or simple work, start spending time on it. Concentrate on it; your efforts will make you more effective over and over. While this is beneficial, you should also do some habits. Meditate, journal, or do workouts. Especially in the breaks of the main work, it’s beneficial to do these tasks.
If you have a part or, better, a forest near you, start spending time in there. Nature always has something calming, something beautiful. Spending time in nature will make it easier to finish the one-week dopamine detox. Simply walking there, listening to nature, and breathing fresh air will feel great for you. If you have never done this, it will be especially beneficial.
Next to all these things, it would also be wonderful to just read something. It could be a fiction book or non-fiction, depending on what you prefer. Try enjoying some novels over a video game; it would be greatly beneficial. It will be calming and help you increase your literacy. Furthermore, you will have more to talk about with other people, especially if it’s a popular book. Incorporating dopamine fasting strategies here can help maintain focus and even further rewire your brain as you invest time in learning and reflection.

Start of the Detox
The early beginning of the detox will be hard. Most likely you will experience urges to do what you now can’t do. This effect will come earlier or later, depending on how much this stuff affects your life. However, this is the time when you can especially train mental strength and discipline. So at this very beginning, stay strong. Realize and tell yourself that, when you fail, you have to restart the whole thing. And focus on the benefits this will give to you and how it will improve your life. Concentrate on tasks that help you naturally recharge productivity without relying on old habits.
The first day you should work on your goals; however, spend more time on other tasks. Like reading a book, doing some workouts, meditations, etc. These tasks will help you with the urges and make you pass the first day much easier. However, keep in mind they won’t be as fulfilling in the beginning.
After a few dates, the dopamine detox will be easier, and you’ll be more productive and focused. However, that’s not a reason to end the detox prematurely. If you do the job longer, it will be even easier for you to maintain it. It’s not a good idea to immediately revert to old habits. Instead, focus on the work you need to do and maintain healthy habits.Afterwards
After a week or more, see if you’re ready to end the detox. Have you reset? Is work now easier? Can you enjoy going into nature or reading a book? If the response is negative, persist with the process until you can confidently answer all the questions in the affirmative.
