How Reading Transformed My Life

Books are a valuable tool that can greatly assist us. Almost everything possible has already been written down. Personally, reading non-fiction books has given me a huge advantage in life. In this article, I’ll share how they changed my life and why reading will change your life too.

Before I started actively reading, I had a general education, but my knowledge, especially about life, was limited. I used to be too lazy to read books, avoiding them as much as possible. Today, I regret not spending more time reading. I could have soaked up huge amounts of knowledge just by setting aside time to read.

But as time went on, especially during my university studies, I started reading non-fiction—and only non-fiction! These included books on subjects that helped me understand the importance of knowledge in any field, from work to sports, business, thinking, and even studying. Knowledge is the key to growth. Once you start learning and reading, you can achieve your goals faster and live a better life.

Becoming More Literate

No matter which nonfiction books you read, they all use educated language, which improved my ability to communicate. No matter how far you want to go in life, at some point you’ll meet smart people, and you can’t communicate well without knowledge. This educated way of expressing myself helped me a lot when I worked with intelligent historians in a past job. I was able to make connections, which is vital for your career. It also improved my writing skills, as reading is the foundation of good writing. If you read a lot, you can write excellent, practical texts too.

Improving My Knowledge

In addition to better communication, I improved my knowledge in many areas. This includes not only topics related to my goals but also books on productivity, fitness, and more. Reading, whether it’s a solid book or an article online, will change your life just like it did mine. There are things you need to learn for a successful life. I gained knowledge about meditation, life wisdom, and work techniques. These skills helped me improve my life. Before reading, I was lazy, undisciplined, lacked direction, and didn’t have meaningful skills. My life wasn’t great. Today, I’ve improved my knowledge, productivity, charisma, and much more through reading.

Reading equals growth. The brightest minds in the world have read a lot. Even successful people have read books—millionaires, for example, read an average of four books a month (52 per year). You won’t get very far without it. That’s why reading will change your life if you allow it.

What About Fiction Books?

Yes, fiction books are useful too! They don’t have the same impact as non-fiction, but they still offer benefits. I only started reading fiction about a year ago. They help improve your concentration, increase empathy, and boost social skills. When reading novels, you immerse yourself in a fictional world and imagine how characters behave. This helps train your social skills and allows you to interact better with people. I noticed this myself when I began overcoming my shyness. Reading helped me remember important details and have better conversations with others.

Incorporating Reading into Your Life

Now that you know what reading can do for you, make it part of your personal growth. You can read e-books, articles, or books from your local library. You’ll absorb more from reading articles about self-development than from watching videos. You’re actively concentrating. Start reading books and articles that enrich your life. If you don’t have books, you can buy some cheaply second-hand or read them online.

I categorize books into four groups: important, useful, okay, and useless. I only read books that are useful. Books that are okay are good for summaries. This saves me time, as there are millions of books to read. Avoid reading pointless books unless required by school or work. Also, set aside time to read novels a few times a week. They help you unwind from daily life and also offer valuable insights.

Conclusion

Reading is an essential tool for growth. It broadens your understanding of the world, enhances communication, and helps you improve every aspect of your life. As I’ve experienced, once you start reading regularly, you’ll see massive changes in how you approach challenges and opportunities. Whether you’re reading non-fiction to gain specific knowledge or diving into fiction for social skills, reading will change your life. It opens doors that would otherwise stay closed.
